The talent search began in late spring 2021 when the Army Field Band began looking for a rap/hip-hop artist to perform for a new music program at the organization. The audit took place in September. Self-described Christian rapper Riddick is the son of a 30-year-old police officer and wrote in an Instagram post about the audition that he deeply respects "all the brave police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us."
The risk paid off. Riddick and fellow artist Nicholas Femster were selected as the first two lead singers of the United States Army Field Band to become full-time rap artists. The pair arrived in Oklahoma on Tuesday, January 18 for basic training at Fort Sill and plan to graduate in mid-March, when they will become full-time members of the band.
So when the song reached its chorus, Riddick sang, "Cops please put your guns down / My hands are up and I'm going down / I promise I won't ask for a gun now / But the choice is yours you can guarantee my life or shoot me down."
